Spartanburg, something big just landed in your backyard. On October 19, [Carolina Orthopedic and Neurosurgical Associates](https://carolinaona.com)
North Grove location opens its doors, bringing orthopedic Spartanburg patients 62,000
square feet of expert care, advanced imaging, and plenty of room to grow.

It is the centerpiece of our “Built for Better Movement” campaign, and the idea
is simple: get you back to the things you love without the long drive.

## Care Closer to Home

A sore knee or an aching shoulder does not wait for a convenient time, and getting
to an appointment should not make things harder. North Grove puts CONA’s orthopedic
care right in Spartanburg, so booking that first visit, keeping up with follow-ups,
and staying on track with recovery all get easier.

## What’s Inside North Grove Orthopedics

Two stories, one address, and a lot under one roof:

 * Orthopedic clinic: spacious waiting rooms and exam rooms made for comfortable
visits and real conversations with your provider.
 * Imaging suite: X-ray rooms, a CT (computed tomography) scanner, and an MRI (magnetic
resonance imaging) machine. When your provider recommends imaging, getting it
in the same building may mean fewer trips.
 * Block Clinic: a dedicated space for imaging-guided procedures, complete with
recovery bays for before and after.
 * Physical therapy: a therapy area to help you rebuild strength and movement after
   an injury or procedure.

Outside, a modern mix of brick, metal panels, and glass makes North Grove easy to
spot. And with about 13,000 square feet of second-floor space ready to be built
out, this is only the beginning.

## Orthopedic Spartanburg Care: What to Expect at Your First Visit

## When to See an Orthopedic Provider

Pain that lasts more than a few days, swelling, stiffness that gets in the way of
daily life, or an injury that is not healing are all good reasons to reach out.
If you have sudden, severe pain, a visible change in the shape of a limb, or cannot
put weight on it after an injury, seek urgent or emergency care right away.

## One Team, Every Injury: Why Fall Sports Season Calls for Multispecialty Care

- Link: https://carolinaona.com/one-team-every-injury-why-fall-sports-season-calls-for-multispecialty-care/
- Published: 2026-09-02T16:23:21-04:00
- Author: gabby

Fall sports season is in full swing across the Upstate, and with it comes a wide
range of injuries walking through our doors, twisted ankles, dislocated fingers,
sore backs from awkward tackles, shoulder injuries from falls, and everything in
between. Not every injury needs the same specialist, and that’s exactly the point.

**Fall sports injuries aren’t one-size-fits-all**

A single practice or game can produce a dozen different injury types across a dozen
different athletes. A soccer player rolls an ankle. A volleyball player jams a finger
diving for a ball. A lineman strains his lower back. A cross-country runner develops
nagging knee pain from increased mileage. Each of these needs a different kind of
expertise, and at most practices, that means different providers, different offices,
and different schedules to coordinate.

**What multispecialty care solves**

At [CONA](https://carolinaona.com/), orthopedic and neurosurgical specialists work
under the same roof, which means:

 * A joint injury, a spine concern, and a nerve issue can all be evaluated without
   bouncing between separate practices
 * Imaging (X-ray, CT, MRI) stays coordinated across specialties, so results don’t
get lost in a referral gap
 * Physical therapy and follow-up care are part of the same care team, not a separate
   step
 * Families get a full picture of an athlete’s injury, not just a piece of it

**A season-long resource, not a one-time visit**

Fall sports injuries don’t stop after week one, and neither should your access to
care. Whether it’s a first-week ankle sprain or a nagging shoulder issue that shows
up in October, having one practice that can handle the full range of what a season
throws at an athlete means less time spent figuring out who to call next.

**Built for what’s ahead**

That same idea, more specialists and more services in one place, is also why we’re
growing. Our new North Grove facility, opening this October in Spartanburg, will
bring expanded imaging, a dedicated procedural clinic, and physical therapy together
under one roof, so care stays coordinated as our patient community grows.

**If your athlete gets hurt this season**

Don’t wait to find out if it’s serious. Whether it’s a knee, a shoulder, a back,
or something else entirely, our team can evaluate it and get your athlete on a clear
path back to the field. [Schedule an Evaluation](https://carolinaona.com/) with

## Fall Sports Concussions: What Parents Should Know

Fall sports are ramping up across the Upstate, with soccer, football, and volleyball
teams already back on the practice field ahead of their first games. Along with
the usual sprains and sore muscles that come with a new season, this stretch of
the year is also when we start seeing more fall sports concussions come through
our doors. Contact and collision are simply a bigger part of these sports, and head
injuries deserve a different level of attention than a rolled ankle.

At [Carolina Orthopaedic & Neurosurgical Associates](https://carolinaona.radixhealth.com/dash/self2/provider-search),
our orthopedic and neurosurgical teams work side by side, which matters most when
an injury involves both a joint and a head. Knowing what to watch for, and what
to do in the moment, can make a real difference in how quickly and safely your athlete
recovers.

## What Is a Concussion?

A concussion is a brain injury caused by a hit to the head or body that causes the
head and brain to move quickly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause chemical
changes in the brain and, sometimes, stretching or damage to brain cells. A concussion
doesn’t require a loss of consciousness. Most athletes with a concussion never black
out, which is part of why concussions can be easy to miss in the moment.

Because a concussion is an injury you can’t see on the outside, it’s often the symptoms
and how an athlete is acting that give the clearest clues something is wrong.

## Signs and Symptoms to Watch For

Concussion symptoms can show up right away or develop over the following hours.
Common signs include:

 * Headache or a feeling of pressure in the head
 * Confusion, or trouble remembering the play, the score, or recent events
 * Dizziness, balance problems, or feeling “foggy”
 * Sensitivity to light or noise
 * Nausea or vomiting
 * Slowed reaction time or unusual clumsiness
 * Changes in mood, such as irritability or unusual sadness
 * Trouble sleeping, or sleeping much more or less than usual

Younger athletes may not always be able to describe how they feel. Coaches and parents
are often the ones who notice a change in behavior, mood, or coordination before
the athlete says anything at all.

## What to Do If You Suspect a Concussion

If your athlete takes a hit and shows any of these signs, the safest next step is
to remove them from play right away. Research suggests that continuing to play with
a concussion, or returning too soon, can slow recovery and raise the risk of a more
serious injury. The saying used by many athletic trainers is simple: “When in doubt,
sit them out.”

From there:

 1. Have your athlete evaluated by a medical provider as soon as possible, ideally
    the same day.
 2. Watch for worsening symptoms, such as repeated vomiting, worsening headache, or
increasing confusion, and seek emergency care right away if these occur.
 3. Follow a gradual, provider-guided return-to-play plan rather than a set number
of days. Recovery time is different for every athlete.

## Why Ortho and Neuro Care Working Together Matters

Head injuries in fall sports rarely happen in isolation, whether they occur at practice
or in a game. An athlete who takes a hard hit to the head during a tackle or a collision
may also have a strained neck, a jammed shoulder, or a sprained wrist from bracing
a fall. Coordinating orthopedic and neurological care under one team can help make
sure nothing gets missed, and that your athlete’s full recovery plan, not just the
head injury, is addressed from the start.

This kind of coordinated care can also simplify things for families. Instead of
juggling separate providers for a joint injury and a head injury, one care team
can look at the whole picture and help guide a safe, complete return to sport.

## When to See a Provider

Most concussions improve with rest and time, but it’s a good idea to have your athlete
evaluated any time there’s a hit to the head, even if symptoms seem mild. Seek care
right away if you notice:

 * Loss of consciousness, even briefly
 * Repeated vomiting or worsening headache
 * Increasing confusion, slurred speech, or unusual drowsiness
 * Seizures or convulsions
 * Symptoms that are getting worse rather than better

When symptoms are less severe, a same-week evaluation is still worthwhile to confirm
a safe path back to practice and games.

## Supporting a Safe Season

Fall sports should be something your athlete gets to enjoy all season long, and
a head injury during practice or a game doesn’t have to sideline them for good.
If your young athlete has a suspected concussion or another injury as fall sports
get underway, our orthopedic and neurosurgical providers work together to guide
a safe recovery from day one. [Schedule an evaluation](https://carolinaona.radixhealth.com/dash/self2/provider-search)

## Fast Track Knee: Same-Day Knee Replacement in Upstate SC

- Link: https://carolinaona.com/same-day-knee-replacement/
- Published: 2026-07-22T11:34:19-04:00
- Author: gabby

If knee pain has been holding you back from the activities you love, you may have
put off doing anything about it — picturing weeks in the hospital and months of
recovery. At Carolina Orthopaedic & Neurosurgical Associates (CONA), same-day knee
replacement is changing that picture for many patients in Greenville, Spartanburg,
and Duncan. It’s called the Fast Track Knee approach, and it’s built around one
idea: move forward fast.

## **What Is the Fast Track Knee Approach?**

The Fast Track Knee approach is a muscle-sparing technique paired with robotic-assisted
guidance. Instead of cutting through the quad muscle — the traditional approach
to knee replacement — CONA’s surgeons move it aside. The muscle stays intact, which
can mean less inflammation and a more comfortable start to recovery. Robotic guidance
then helps the surgical team position the implant with a high degree of precision
for each patient’s unique anatomy.

## **Who Might Benefit?**

People living with ongoing knee pain from arthritis or joint damage — especially
those who’ve tried other treatments without lasting relief — may be candidates for
knee replacement. The Fast Track Knee approach may be a good fit for patients who
want to explore a same-day outpatient option and who are otherwise healthy enough
for outpatient surgery. Your orthopedic surgeon can help determine if you’re a candidate
based on your health history and imaging.

## **What to Expect With Same-Day Knee Replacement **

 * **Evaluation: **Your surgeon reviews your symptoms, imaging, and health history
to talk through whether the Fast Track Knee approach fits your situation.
 * **Surgery day: **The muscle-sparing technique combined with robotic guidance
is designed to reduce surgical trauma.
 * **Same-day recovery: **Many Fast Track Knee patients are up and walking with
assistance and home the same afternoon, though your care team will confirm you
   meet discharge criteria first.
 * **Ongoing recovery: **Recovery timelines vary by patient, but many people report
less pain in the early days compared with traditional knee replacement, with
physical therapy supporting a gradual return to activity.

## **Risks and Considerations**

As with any joint replacement surgery, the Fast Track Knee approach carries risks,
including infection, blood clots, implant wear over time, and the normal risks associated
with anesthesia and outpatient surgery. Same-day discharge isn’t the right choice
for every patient — some people will benefit from a longer hospital stay depending
on their overall health. It’s important to talk with your surgeon about your specific
risk factors before deciding on any procedure.

## **When to Talk to a Provider**

If knee pain is limiting your ability to walk, work, or do the things you enjoy —
and it hasn’t improved with rest, medication, or physical therapy — it’s a good
time to talk with an orthopedic specialist about your options, including whether
the Fast Track Knee approach could be right for you.

## **One Practice, Many Specialties**

The Fast Track Knee approach is one part of a broader range of care at CONA. As
a multispecialty practice, our team also treats sports injuries, spine conditions,
and neurological conditions — often coordinating care across specialties so patients
aren’t left piecing together their own treatment plan. Wherever you need care to
start, our fellowship-trained specialists in Greenville, Spartanburg, and Duncan
are here to help you move forward fast.

## **Taking the Next Step**

Knee pain doesn’t have to mean a long road to recovery. Talk with a Carolina Ortho
specialist about whether same-day knee replacement through the Fast Track Knee approach
is right for you, and learn more about our full range of orthopedic and neurological
care.

# **One Practice, Every Specialty: What Multispecialty Orthopedic Care Means for You**

Summer in the Upstate means more time outside, and for a lot of people, it also
means an old injury flaring up or that nagging pain that has been easy to ignore
until now. The problem is figuring out where to start. A referral here, a wait there,
and still no one who seems to have the full picture. That runaround can delay the
relief you actually need.

That is exactly what multispecialty orthopedic care is designed to fix.

## **What Is Multispecialty Orthopedic Care?**

Most orthopedic practices focus on one or two areas. A multispecialty practice brings
together specialists across the entire musculoskeletal and neurological system under
one roof. At [Carolina Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical Associates (CONA)](https://carolinaona.com/?utm_source=ig&utm_medium=social&utm_content=link_in_bio),
that means orthopedic surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, physical therapy, pain management,
sports medicine, joint replacement, and more, all at the same practice, with the
same coordinated team.

## **Why It Matters for You**

When your care team is in the same building, a few things change:

 * **Your records follow you.** No starting over or repeating yourself with every
   new provider.
 * **Diagnoses happen faster.** If your knee pain involves a nerve issue, the neurologist
   is already here.
 * **Your providers are aligned.** Your surgeon, therapist, and pain management
   physician share the same plan.
 * **You make fewer trips.** On-site MRI, physical therapy, and occupational therapy
mean more happens in one visit.

## **What CONA Treats**

CONA’s Centers of Excellence cover the full body:

 * **Spine, Neck and Back:** disc issues, stenosis, and surgical care when needed
 * **Shoulder, Elbow, Hand and Wrist:** sports injuries and chronic overuse conditions
 * **Hip, Knee, Foot and Ankle:** conservative care through joint replacement
 * **Neurology and Neurosurgery:** nerve pain, numbness, weakness, and neurological
   conditions
 * **Sports Medicine:** for athletes from high schoolers to weekend warriors
 * **Pain Management:** non-surgical relief focused on reducing pain and improving
   function
 * **Physical and Occupational Therapy:** on-site rehab customized to your goals

## **Fast Access When You Need It**

For urgent injuries, CONA’s Orthopedic Urgent Care in Spartanburg, Greenville, and
Duncan lets you skip the ER and see the right specialist the same day. For everything
else, online scheduling means no phone tag and no hold music. You do not need a
referral. Just pick your provider and go.

It is worth coming in if you are dealing with joint pain lasting more than a few
weeks, numbness or tingling in your arms or legs, pain that worsens with activity,
or an injury that is not improving on its own.

## **Your Whole Body, One Team**

Multispecialty care is not just more convenient. It leads to better outcomes. When
your providers share the full picture, they make better decisions and you spend
less time waiting and more time getting better.

CONA serves the Upstate with locations in Spartanburg, Duncan, and Greenville. The
right specialist is closer than you think. [Schedule an appointment](https://carolinaona.radixhealth.com/dash/self2/provider-search)

## Is Surgery the Only Option for Spine Pain? Here’s What Our Surgeons Say

# Is Surgery the Only Option for Spine Pain? Here’s What Our Surgeons Say

If you’ve been living with [back pain](https://carolinaona.com/orthopedic-spine-surgery/),
[neck pain](https://carolinaona.com/pain-management/), or a [spine condition](https://carolinaona.com/orthopedic-spine-surgery/),
the word “surgeon” can feel alarming. You may be wondering if an operation is inevitable—
or whether there are other options worth exploring first. The good news is that,
for many people, [spine pain treatment](https://carolinaona.com/orthopedic-spine-surgery/)
without surgery is not only possible, but it’s also where our specialists at Carolina
Orthopaedic & Neurosurgical Associates (CONA) always start.

Our board-certified spine and neurosurgery team — Drs. Adkins, Chittum, Lim, and
Shields — believes that surgery should be a carefully considered last resort, not
a reflexive first step.

So what does conservative care actually look like? And when does surgery become
the right answer? Here is a straightforward look at how our surgeons think about
your options.

## What is non-surgical spine care?

[Non-surgical spine care](https://carolinaona.com/orthopedic-spine-surgery/) refers
to a range of treatments that can reduce pain, restore movement, and improve quality
of life, without an operation. These approaches work by addressing the underlying
causes of spine pain, including inflammation, muscle weakness, nerve compression,
and joint stress.

Conditions that often respond well to conservative treatment include herniated discs,
spinal stenosis (a narrowing of the spinal canal), sciatica (nerve pain radiating
down the leg), degenerative disc disease, radiculopathy (nerve pain from the spine),
and early-stage scoliosis (abnormal spinal curvature).

For many people with these diagnoses, the spine has the ability to adapt and heal
with the right support, and non-surgical care can provide exactly that.

## Conservative approaches your CONA team may recommend

Every patient is different. Your treatment plan will depend on your specific diagnosis,
the severity of your symptoms, your overall health, and your goals. That said, there
are several well-established non-surgical options your spine specialist may discuss
with you.

### Physical therapy

A structured physical therapy program can strengthen the muscles that support your
spine, improve flexibility, and reduce pressure on affected nerves or discs. Many
people find significant, lasting relief through a personalized therapy plan, especially
when combined with other treatments.

### Medication management

[Anti-inflammatory medications, muscle relaxants, and nerve pain medications](https://carolinaona.com/pain-management/)
can play an important role in managing spine pain, particularly during flare-ups.
Your provider will work with you to find the right approach based on your symptoms
and health history.

### Corticosteroid injections

Targeted injections deliver anti-inflammatory medication directly to the area causing
pain, whether that is a disc, joint, or irritated nerve root. These can provide
meaningful relief and buy valuable time for other conservative treatments to work.

### Activity modification and lifestyle guidance

Simple changes to how you move, sit, lift, and sleep can have a significant impact
on spine health. Your care team may provide specific guidance to help you protect
your spine during daily activities while you recover.

## When should you talk to a spine specialist?

It is a good idea to schedule a consultation if your back or neck pain has lasted
more than a few weeks and is not improving, your pain is radiating into your arms
or legs, you are experiencing numbness, tingling, or weakness in your extremities,
pain is interfering with sleep, work, or daily activities, or you have tried home
remedies or primary care treatment without lasting relief.

If you are experiencing sudden loss of bladder or bowel control, seek care immediately.
This can be a sign of a serious spinal condition called cauda equina syndrome (compression
of nerves at the base of the spine) that requires urgent evaluation.

## Getting clarity starts with a conversation

Living with spine pain is exhausting, and worrying about what treatment might mean
for your life can make it even harder. The most important thing you can do is get
the right information from the right team. Spine pain treatment without surgery
is a real, evidence-based option for many people, and knowing whether it is right
for you starts with a single appointment.

The spine and neurosurgery team at Carolina Orthopaedic & Neurosurgical Associates
is here to give you answers and a plan you can feel confident in. Schedule a consultation
at carolinaona.com/spine or call us at (843) 583-CONA. Our 24/7 Hurt Line is also

# **Sports Medicine: From the Field to the Weekend Warrior**

Spring means baseball, soccer, trail runs, and backyard games. Whether you’re a
student-athlete pushing your limits or a weekend warrior reclaiming your fitness
routine, your body is working hard to keep up. And sometimes, it needs a little
help.

At Carolina Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical Associates (CONA), we know injuries don’t
wait for a convenient moment. A twisted ankle on the soccer field or a knee that
gave out on your morning run can stop you in your tracks. That’s why we built CONA
24/7, your first step toward expert orthopaedic care when you need it most.

## **Sports Medicine Is for Everybody**

Sports medicine focuses on preventing, diagnosing, and treating injuries related
to physical activity. It’s not just for elite athletes. It’s for anyone who moves
and wants to keep moving. Common conditions include:

 * Sprains and strains of the ankle, knee, wrist, and shoulder
 * Overuse injuries such as tendinitis, shin splints, and stress fractures
 * ACL and other ligament injuries
 * Growth plate injuries in young athletes
 *  Return-to-sport evaluations

## **Spring Sports and the Risk of Injury**

April is National Youth Sports Safety Month, a timely reminder that as kids and
teens ramp up their activity after winter, the risk of injury rises alongside their
enthusiasm. Muscles that have been less active are suddenly being put to work, such
as sprinting, pivoting, and throwing. Adults face a similar pattern, often returning
too quickly to high-intensity exercise after months of reduced activity.

Seek prompt orthopaedic attention if you notice:

 * Swelling, bruising, or tenderness around a joint
 * Pain that worsens with activity or doesn’t improve with rest
 * A pop or snap at the time of injury
 * Inability to bear weight on a limb

## **Injured? Start with CONA 24/7**

CONA 24/7 is our around-the-clock resource that connects you with the right level
of orthopaedic care, fast. Not every injury requires a trip to the ER. Many musculoskeletal
injuries are better served by specialists who focus specifically on bones, joints,
muscles, and movement. CONA 24/7 helps you navigate that decision quickly and confidently,
any time of day. [Get started here!](https://www.poweredbyhurt.com/carolinaona)

## **Move Forward Fast with Orthopaedic Urgent Care**

the kind of injuries that happen during spring sports season. No appointment is
needed. With on-site X-rays and access to CONA’s full network of sub-specialists,

## When Orthopaedic Injuries Can’t Wait: The Convenience of Specialized Urgent Care

- Link: https://carolinaona.com/when-orthopaedic-injuries-cant-wait-the-convenience-of-specialized-urgent-care/
- Published: 2026-01-21T16:29:21-05:00

Injuries rarely happen at a convenient time. A slip and fall, a sudden knee injury,
or unexpected joint pain can disrupt your day in an instant. When that happens,
waiting days or weeks for an appointment may not feel like an option.

That’s where orthopaedic urgent care can make a real difference.

At Carolina Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical Associates (CONA), orthopaedic urgent
care offers a convenient, easy-access way to be evaluated quickly by providers who
specialize in bones, joints, and movement. Care is delivered by a full line of orthopaedic
sub-specialists, not generalists, so patients can feel confident they are getting
the right care from the start.

## ** **

## **What Is Orthopaedic Urgent Care?**

Orthopaedic urgent care is designed for injuries that need timely attention but
are not life-threatening emergencies. It focuses specifically on musculoskeletal
issues, allowing providers to concentrate on diagnosing and treating the source
of pain efficiently.

Patients often visit orthopaedic urgent care for:

 * Sprains and strains
 * Suspected fractures
 * Sports-related injuries
 * Sudden joint pain or swelling
 * Shoulder, knee, hip, ankle, or wrist injuries
 * Back or neck pain related to an injury

Instead of navigating a busy emergency room, patients receive focused care in a
setting built around orthopaedic needs.

## ** **

## **Convenience That Fits Real Life**

One of the biggest benefits of orthopaedic urgent care is convenience. Visits are
designed to be straightforward and efficient, with easy access for patients who
need answers quickly.

Orthopaedic urgent care offers:

 * Faster access to care without long emergency room wait times
 * A streamlined experience focused on musculoskeletal injuries
 * Prompt evaluation and clear next steps
 * A comfortable environment centered on patient needs

For many injuries, this approach leads to quicker relief and a clearer path forward.

## ** **

## **Care From a Full Line of Orthopaedic Sub-Specialists**

What truly sets orthopaedic urgent care apart is the expertise behind it. At CONA,
urgent care is staffed by a full line of orthopaedic sub-specialists who treat bone,
joint, and muscle conditions every day.

This includes specialists with experience in:

 * Sports medicine
 * Joint and arthritis care
 * Spine and back conditions
 * Upper extremity injuries such as shoulder, elbow, and hand
 * Lower extremity injuries involving the hip, knee, foot, and ankle

Because care is delivered by specialists from the beginning, patients benefit from
accurate diagnosis and thoughtful treatment planning, often without the need for
multiple referrals.

## ** **

## **The Right Care at the Right Time**

Getting care quickly matters, but getting the right care matters even more. Orthopaedic
urgent care helps bridge that gap by addressing injuries promptly while keeping
long-term recovery in mind.

This approach can help:

 * Prevent minor injuries from becoming more serious
 * Reduce unnecessary emergency room visits
 * Provide a smooth transition to follow-up care if needed
 * Support a faster and safer return to daily activities

Because orthopaedic urgent care is part of CONA’s broader practice, patients have
easy access to imaging, therapy, and specialty follow-up when appropriate.

## ** **

## **A Smarter Option for Orthopaedic Injuries**

When an injury cannot wait but does not require emergency care, orthopaedic urgent
care offers a practical and patient-centered solution.

With convenient access, specialized focus, and care delivered by a full line of
orthopaedic sub-specialists, CONA’s urgent care model is designed to help patients
move forward without unnecessary delays.

Because when pain affects your movement, getting timely, expert care makes all the
difference.

## Strains And Sprains Treatment in Spartanburg, Duncan, and Greenville, SC

## **Fast, Specialized Care When Injuries Happen**

Strains and sprains are among the most common orthopedic injuries, affecting muscles,
ligaments, and tendons that support movement and stability. Although they may sound
minor, these injuries can be painful, limit mobility, and lead to long-term problems
if not properly treated. At [Carolina Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery Associates](https://carolinaona.com/),
our [Orthopedic Urgent Care ](https://carolinaona.com/orthopedic-urgent-care/)provides
immediate evaluation and expert care for strains and sprains, helping you recover
quickly and safely without the need for an emergency room visit.

Our [experienced orthopedic providers](https://carolinaona.com/physicians-staff/)
understand the difference between a simple soft tissue injury and one that requires
advanced intervention. Whether you twisted your ankle during a workout, strained
your back while lifting, or sprained your wrist from a fall, we offer same-day access
to specialized orthopedic evaluation and on-site imaging to ensure an accurate diagnosis.

## **Understanding Strains And Sprains**

A strain occurs when a muscle or tendon is overstretched or torn. This often happens
in the back, hamstrings, or shoulders during activities that require sudden force
or overexertion. A sprain, on the other hand, involves damage to the ligaments,
the tough tissues that connect bones together, most commonly in the ankle, knee,
or wrist.

Both injuries can cause swelling, bruising, tenderness, or instability, but determining
severity is key. A mild sprain may involve microscopic tears, while a severe one
may involve a complete ligament rupture. Our Orthopedic Urgent Care team evaluates
each case carefully to ensure that nothing more serious, such as a [fracture](https://carolinaona.com/ankle-fractures/)
or [tendon tear](https://carolinaona.com/quadriceps-tendon-tear/), is missed.

## **Evaluation And Treatment For Strains And Sprains**

At CONA Orthopedic Urgent Care, your visit begins with a focused physical examination
to assess pain, swelling, range of motion, and joint stability. We may recommend
[X-rays](https://carolinaona.com/orthopedic-urgent-care/x-ray-clinic/) to rule out
bone injury or additional imaging if soft tissue damage is suspected. Once the diagnosis
is confirmed, we create a treatment plan to reduce pain, support healing, and restore
function.

For mild to moderate injuries, treatment often includes rest, ice, compression,
and elevation to reduce inflammation. Supportive braces or wraps may be used to
protect the injured area and prevent further strain. Our orthopedic providers can
prescribe medications to manage pain and swelling when necessary. In more severe
cases, such as complete ligament tears or muscle ruptures, we collaborate with our
orthopedic surgeons and [physical therapists](https://carolinaona.com/physical-therapy/)
to plan surgical or rehabilitative treatment as needed.

Early rehabilitation is an essential part of recovery. Once pain and swelling improve,
we focus on strengthening and mobility exercises to rebuild stability and prevent
re-injury. Our physical therapy team provides personalized guidance to help you
return safely to work, sports, and daily activities.

## **Frequently Asked Questions**

### How Do I Know If I Have A Sprain Or A Fracture?

Sprains can mimic fractures because both cause swelling and pain. However, fractures
often cause deformity, inability to bear weight, or severe tenderness over a bone.
Our on-site X-rays at CONA Orthopedic Urgent Care can quickly confirm the diagnosis.

### When Should I Seek Medical Care For A Strain Or Sprain?

You should visit orthopedic urgent care if pain and swelling are significant, if
you cannot bear weight, move the affected joint, or if symptoms do not improve within
a few days. Prompt evaluation ensures proper healing and helps prevent chronic instability.

### How Long Does It Take To Recover From A Sprain Or Strain?

Most mild strains and sprains heal within two to four weeks with rest and proper
treatment. More severe injuries involving torn ligaments or muscles may require
several months and physical therapy to restore full strength and mobility.

## Closed Fractures Treatment in Spartanburg, Duncan, and Greenville, SC

## **Immediate Evaluation At CONA Orthopedic Urgent Care**

A closed fracture is a broken bone that does not break through the skin. While it
may look less dramatic than an open fracture, a closed fracture still demands prompt
and expert attention to ensure proper healing and to prevent complications. At CONA’s
[Orthopedic Urgent Care & Walk-in](https://carolinaona.com/orthopedic-urgent-care/),
we prioritize fast, accurate diagnosis and treatment for closed fractures so you
can begin your recovery without delay.

Our experienced [orthopedic clinicians](https://carolinaona.com/physicians-staff/)
understand that timing and technique are critical in fracture care. Even though
the bone is contained within the skin, swelling, misalignment, or nearby damage
to soft tissues, nerves, or blood vessels can worsen if left untreated. Our urgent
care location is designed to offer the specialized resources you need, on-site imaging,
skilled orthopedic evaluation, and timely intervention without the long wait times
or high costs of an emergency room.

## **Diagnostic Process For Closed Fracture**

When you arrive at CONA Orthopedic Urgent Care with a suspected closed [fracture](https://carolinaona.com/ankle-fractures/),
your evaluation begins with a thorough history and physical examination. We ask
how the injury occurred, what you felt or heard, when symptoms began, and where
pain and swelling are located. We test circulation, sensation, and motor function
distal to the injury to rule out nerve or vascular compromise.

We then obtain [X-rays](https://carolinaona.com/orthopedic-urgent-care/x-ray-clinic/)
immediately to visualize the fracture, determine its type (for example, transverse,
oblique, spiral, or comminuted), assess displacement, alignment, and involvement
of the joint. In more complex cases or when additional detail is needed, we may
order CT scans or advanced imaging to help plan optimal management.

## **Closed Fracture Treatment at CONA Orthopedic Walk-In Clinic**

After confirming the fracture type and assessing the surrounding tissue status,
our goal is to restore alignment, stabilize the bone, and promote healing while
preserving function. If the bone segments are displaced, our orthopedic team may
perform a closed reduction, a non-surgical manipulation to realign them. Closed
reduction allows bone alignment without making a surgical incision.

Once the bone is aligned, we immobilize the area using a cast, splint, brace, or
rigid immobilizer, depending on the fracture site, stability needs, and anticipated
healing time. We provide clear instructions regarding limb positioning, swelling
control (elevation, ice), and pain management. We monitor healing progress through
scheduled follow-up X-rays and clinic visits, making adjustments if alignment shifts.
In rare instances, if a closed fracture proves unstable or fails to hold alignment,
we coordinate with our orthopedic surgery team to consider surgical intervention.

Rehabilitation is an important part of your recovery. Once healing permits, we mobilize
joints above and below the fracture to prevent stiffness and muscle atrophy. We
guide you through progressive strengthening, weight-bearing protocols, and functional
training tailored to your fracture site and lifestyle.

## **Frequently Asked Questions**

### How Long Does It Take A Closed Fracture To Heal?

Healing time for a closed fracture depends on factors such as the bone involved,
patient age, overall health, and fracture complexity. Many simple [fractures](https://carolinaona.com/elbow-fractures/)
heal in six to eight weeks. More complicated or slower-healing fractures may take
three to four months or longer, especially in adults or in bones with a weaker blood
supply.

### Can A Closed Fracture Be Treated Without Surgery?

Yes, many closed fractures can be treated nonoperatively with closed reduction and
immobilization if alignment is good and the fracture is stable. Our team monitors
healing with serial imaging and will intervene surgically only if the bone fails
to stay aligned or if other complications arise.

### When Should I Go To The Emergency Room Instead Of Orthopedic Urgent Care?

You should go directly to the ER if the injury involves an open fracture (bone piercing
the skin), severe deformity, loss of sensation, inability to move the limb, signs
of compromised blood flow, major trauma, head or spine injury, or uncontrollable
bleeding. For closed, nonemergent fractures in extremities, CONA Orthopedic Urgent
Care provides appropriate and timely care.
