## EDUCATION FOR PAIN MANAGEMENT

##### Arthritis Following An Injury

An injury can damage joint bone, cartilage, and soft tissues. When left untreated,
damages cause joint wear and tear and early onset or postinjury arthritis. Postinjury
arthritis treatment is always best—nonsurgical treatment options decrease symptoms
and prevent the condition from becoming worse.

##### Back Pain

Statistics show that 80 percent of all adults will experience low back pain at some
point in their lives. Most back pain is short lived but over 40 percent of patients
with low back pain will have complaints of pain for one and two years later. The
experienced staff at CONA’s Pain Center work with pain management therapies in Spartanburg&
Greenville SC to help reduce or eliminate back pain and help you get back to your
normal daily activities. Our specialized physicians will diagnosis and prescribe
the best treatment for the problem. Some of the treatments include epidural injections,
facet joint injections, sacroiliac joint injections, trigger point injections, discography
and radiofrequency ablation.

##### Neck Pain

Neck pain can come from many different causes, including arthritis, work-related
injuries, auto accidents or just bad posture. The pain management staff of CONA
Pain Center in Spartanburg will work with each patient to determine the type of
pain they have and choose an appropriate treatment for their injury. Treatments
may include medications, cervical epidural steroid injections, radiofrequency ablation
or physical therapy.

##### Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. This type of arthritis can
cause knee, hip, and other joint pain that many times is the result of repetitive
motions. It’s important to accurately diagnose the source of the pain to determine
the appropriate treatment, which may include medications, physical therapy, and
peripheral joint injections. Surgical consultation is provided when necessary.

##### Osteoperosis

Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones that is characterized by a loss of bone density
leaving bones at an increased risk of breaking or fracturing. Osteoporosis can be
prevented with lifestyle changes such as exercise and a diet rich in calcium and
vitamin D, as well as exercise and alcohol and smoking. CONA Pain Center near Greenville
SC staff can help evaluate osteoporosis and prescribe appropriate treatment. Painful
fractures that do not respond to bracing or medication may be treated with kyphoplasty.
Kyphoplasty is a procedure that uses orthopaedic cement to stabilize the fracture,
relieve pain and restore some vertebral height.

##### Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder where the body mounts an immune attack
on joint bone and cartilage. Rheumatoid arthritis symptoms can make it hard to perform
many day-to-day movements without pain. Patients are encouraged to make an appointment
with a Carolina Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical Associates’ (CONA) specialist as soon
as symptoms present. Early treatment decreases symptoms and prevents rheumatoid
arthritis from becoming worse.

##### Sciatica

Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve from your
back down to your buttock and leg. The radiating pain of sciatica, also known as“
pinched nerve,” signals a problem involving the nerve such as a herniated disk.
The staff of CONA Pain Center in Spartanburg will thoroughly evaluate the patient
and determine which particular nerve is causing the pain and treat appropriately.
Treatment options may include medications, physical therapy, and nerve root blocks.

##### Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy often causes numbness and pain in your hands and feet, which
is the result of nerve damage. This nerve disorder is often described by patients
as a tingling or burning sensation. Treatment options include prescribed medications
or spinal cord stimulation.

##### Myofascial Pain

Myofascial pain is a chronic form of muscle pain that radiates from sensitive points
in your muscles called trigger points. The trigger points can be painful when touched
and the pain can spread throughout the affected areas. This painful condition can
be treated with medications, physical therapy, exercise and trigger point injections.

##### Failed Back Surgery Syndrome

Failed Back Surgery Syndrome is a term that is used to describe a patient who continues
to have pain following multiple surgeries. The term “failed back” does not mean
that the surgery was done incorrectly. It is important to properly determine where
the pain is originating from — which may include further degeneration of the spine
or stress that is now produced in different areas of the spine. When dealing with
pain management in Greenville & Spartanburg SC, CONA Pain Center will help determine
the source of the pain and help find relief for the patient. Treatment options may
include medications or diagnostic and therapeutic interventional procedures.
