### Shin Splints Overview

Shin splints are inflammation of shin muscles, tendons and soft tissues. Shin splint
symptom may make it very hard to run, walk or even stand. A Carolina Orthopaedic
and Neurosurgical Associates’ (CONA) foot and ankle specialist prescribes a customized
treatment plan to quickly reduce symptoms.

## **Symptoms & Causes**

Shin splint symptoms include:

 * Dull throbbing pain
 * Sharp pain
 * Soreness
 * Tenderness

Shin splints are common in athletes and active individuals. Causes include:

 * Flat feet
 * Sudden physical activity volume or intensity changes
 * Long distance running
 * Rigid arches

## **Common Treatments:**

A combination of nonsurgical treatment options treats shin splints. After a thorough
evaluation, a CONA foot and ankle specialist may recommend:

 * A walking boot
 * Activity modification
 * Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs)
 * Orthotics
 * Rest, ice, compression, elevation (RICE)
 * Shoe changes
 * Stretching exercises

Surgery is not a shin splint treatment option.
