### Vascular Malformations Overview

Vascular malformations are artery, blood vessel, lymph vessel and vein abnormalities.
Symptoms can be unpleasant and sometimes life-altering. A Carolina Orthopaedic and
Neurosurgical Associates’ (CONA) neurovascular specialist should be contacted as
soon as symptoms present.

## **Symptoms & Causes**

Vascular malformations symptoms include:

 * Confusion
 * Coordination problems
 * Dizziness
 * Loss of memory
 * Muscle weakness
 * Muscle paralysis
 * Numbness
 * Speech and understanding problems
 * Spine pain
 * Tingling
 * Vision problems

Vascular malformations occur during fetal development. The two risk factors are
gender (male) and family history.

## **Common Treatments:**

A variety of medications, minimally invasive procedures and traditional surgical
procedures are available. After a thorough evaluation, a CONA neurovascular specialist
makes an accurate diagnosis and prescribes an appropriate treatment plan.
