Meniscus Tears
Meniscus Tear Overview
The meniscus is a piece of soft cartilage that protects the knee bones from rubbing. A meniscus tear is a common injury that makes it difficult to move the knee without pain. Carolina Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical Associates’ (CONA) knee specialists accurately diagnosis and effectively treat meniscus tears so patients do not have to worry about knee pain keeping them from doing the things they enjoy.
Symptoms & Causes
Meniscus tear symptoms include:
- A clicking sensation when the knee bends
- Decreased range of motion
- Knee instability
- Pain
- Stiffness
- Swelling
- Tenderness
Common meniscus tear causes include:
- Osteoarthritis
- Running and jumping sports
Common Treatments:
Nonsurgical treatment options treat some meniscus tears. After a thorough evaluation, a CONA shoulder specialist may recommend:
- A brace or assistive device
- Activity modification
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications
- Physical therapy
- Injections
Minimally invasive surgery may be recommended to treat severe meniscus tears that do not respond to nonsurgical treatment.
Diagnosis:
A CONA specialist listens carefully as the patient describes how their injury occurred and what symptoms they have experienced. A complete physical examination of the knee is performed. X-rays and an MRI are ordered and analyzed and an accurate diagnosis is made.
