About Arthritis Following an Injury

What is it and what are my treatment options?

Arthritis Following an Injury Overview

An injury can damage joint bone, cartilage and soft tissues. When left untreated, damages cause joint wear and tear and early onset or postinjury arthritis. Postinjury arthritis treatment is always best—nonsurgical treatment options decrease symptoms and prevent the condition from becoming worse.

Symptoms & Causes

Postinjury arthritis symptoms include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Stiffness
  • Weakness

Common postinjury arthritis causes are:

  • Falls
  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Sports injuries

Common Treatments:

Nonsurgical treatment options treat the majority of cases of postinjury arthritis. Any of the following may be included in a CONA specialist’s treatment plan:

  • Activity modification
  • Bracing or immobilization
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications
  • Physical therapy
  • Rest, ice, compression, elevation (RICE)

In some cases, a corticosteroid injection may be offered for fast-acting pain relief while other treatment options began to work.
