Vertebroplasty
Vertebroplasty Overview
Vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive spine surgery that treats vertebral compression fractures. Carolina Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical Associates’ (CONA) spine specialists are vertebroplasty experts.
How is vertebroplasty performed?
Vertebroplasty is performed under general or local anesthesia. The patient is comfortably positioned, completely asleep and can feel no discomfort or pain. A CONA kyphoplasty specialist injects biological cement into fractured vertebrae. The cement hardens and the fracture is stabilized. Symptoms are reduced shortly after the procedure. Procedure time is approximately 30 minutes per each vertebral level treated.
What conditions can vertebroplasty treat?
Vertebroplasty is the ideal treatment option for vertebral compression fractures that do not respond to nonsurgical treatment options. Common vertebral compression fracture causes are:
- Injuries
- Osteoporosis
