What Is Causing My Foot Pain?

What Is Causing My Foot Pain?

Foot pain can still make everyday activities like walking, exercising, or standing challenging. At Carolina Orthopaedic & Neurological Associates, we understand how frustrating it is to deal with ongoing discomfort.

Plantar Fasciitis

One of the most frequent causes of foot pain is plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of your foot, connecting your heel to your toes. The pain usually feels sharp and is often worse in the morning or after long periods of standing. It can be triggered by factors like overuse, common in runners and athletes, wearing footwear that lacks proper arch support, or having excessive weight that puts extra stress on the feet. Resting the feet, stretching exercises, and wearing supportive shoes can help reduce symptoms. However, if the pain persists, it might be time to see a specialist for other treatment options.

Bunions

A bunion is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe, causing it to angle towards the second toe. This condition can lead to significant discomfort, especially while wearing shoes. Bunions often develop due to a genetic predisposition to the condition, wearing tight or narrow footwear that forces the toes into unnatural positions, or as a result of arthritis. Treatment options include wearing wider shoes to alleviate pressure or using orthotic inserts for support. In more severe cases, surgical options may be necessary to correct the alignment and relieve pain.

Achilles Tendinitis

When you experience pain in the back of your foot, particularly after physical activity, could be a sign of Achilles tendinitis. This condition occurs when the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscle to the heel bone, becomes inflamed. It is often linked to a sudden increase in physical activity, tight calf muscles that strain the tendon, or wearing improper footwear that does not provide adequate support. Resting, applying ice, and performing calf stretches can help reduce discomfort. If the pain continues, medical intervention may be needed to prevent further damage.

Stress Fractures

Stress fractures are tiny cracks in the bone, commonly caused by overuse, repetitive impact, or weakened bones. They can occur in the toes or the long bones of the foot, known as metatarsals, and lead to pain that worsens with activity. While stress fractures are common in athletes, particularly runners, they can affect anyone engaging in high-impact activities without sufficient rest.

Nerve Issues

Foot pain isn’t always due to bone or muscle problems; sometimes, it can stem from nerve issues. Conditions such as Morton’s neuroma, which causes sharp or burning pain between the toes due to thickened tissue around the nerves, and sciatica, where pain radiates from the lower back down into the feet, are examples. Both conditions require a thorough medical evaluation to determine the appropriate treatment.
